About
Stephen Barrie, ND, PhD is Viome's VP and Head of Clinical Nutrition and a long-running figure in functional-medicine diagnostics. He co-founded Genova Diagnostics with David Perlmutter, MD in the late 1980s and led it for 17 years as CEO and Chairman while it became a major functional-medicine reference lab. His public bios credit him with early intestinal-permeability, SIBO breath, stool-analysis, and SNP-testing work, plus co-authorship of The 7-Day Detox Miracle and contributions to the Textbook of Natural Medicine.
What to Know
Signature approach
Barrie's Viome role is the nutrition-translation layer: connecting RNA-derived gut, oral, and cellular signals to food recommendations, supplement logic, and clinician-friendly framing. It is a continuation of his Genova chapter, but with RNA metatranscriptomics replacing the older stool, breath, urine, and serum lab toolkit.
What sets them apart
- Functional-medicine lab builder. Barrie co-founded and ran Genova Diagnostics, a foundational lab in the functional-medicine ecosystem.
- Clinical nutrition bridge. His Viome role sits between molecular signals and practical food/supplement recommendations.
- Reference-text credibility. His book and textbook contributions give him visibility in naturopathic and integrative-medicine education.
